Easy Modest Fall Outfit Ideas for Real Life | Coffee Chat Try-On

Some fall mornings call for a carefully planned outfit.

Others call for coffee, a cardigan, and approximately 30 seconds to figure out what you're wearing. 😂

This week's Coffee Chat was filmed during what feels like the longest stretch of grey, cloudy September weather we've had in a while here in Iowa. We were VERY ready for a little sunshine—and some easy fall outfit inspiration didn't hurt either.

If you're looking for modest fall outfits that work for everyday life, this week's try-on is full of pieces you can wear for teaching, work, church, errands, school pickup and all the regular things filling your calendar.

Watch the Coffee Chat replay below, then keep scrolling for the outfit ideas + styling tips we talked about.

1. A Black Gingham Blouse You Can Dress Up OR Down

We started with a customer request: our Black Gingham Cotton Blouse with Ruffle Details.

This is exactly the kind of top we love carrying because it doesn't require an entirely new outfit to make it work.

Pair it with a denim midi skirt and simple shoes for an easy everyday look, or dress it up with a black or colored skirt for church, teaching or work.

The gingham gives you the fall feel while the feminine ruffle details make it a little more special than your everyday basic.

STYLE IT WITH: denim midi skirts, black skirts, colored denim, flats or simple sneakers.

2. The Black Cardigan That Solves a LOT of Outfit Problems

Next up was our Black Ribbed Open Front Cardigan—and this one earns its closet space.

A woman wearing a black ribbed open-front cardigan with pockets over a beige tank top and light blue jean skirt, standing indoors against a gray wall with woven decor.

It's super soft, easy to layer and neutral enough to work over pieces you already own.

Throw it over a graphic tee for errands. Add it to a blouse for work. Layer it over a dress for church. Keep it nearby when the Midwest can't decide what temperature it's supposed to be. 😂

A simple black cardigan is one of those pieces that may not look like the most exciting purchase in your cart, but it can quickly become one of the things you wear the most.

3. Don't Overlook a Good Basic—Especially When It's on Sale 👀

We also tried on our White Drop-Shoulder Top, which has now moved into the sale section.

Woman wearing a white long-sleeve shirt and blue jean skirt standing against a wall with decorative plates.

Basics like this are especially handy during fall because they're easy to build around.

Wear it alone with denim while temperatures are mild, then start adding cardigans, jackets and other layers as the weather cools down.

It's also a good reminder that sometimes the piece your closet needs isn't another statement sweater—it's the simple top that makes three things you already own easier to wear.

4. An Easy Floral Sweater for Church, Work + Everyday

Our Brown Chicory Coffee Floral Mock Neck Sweater brought a little life to all those grey skies. 🤎

The warm brown color feels right at home in a fall wardrobe, while the floral front gives it enough detail that you don't need to do much else.

Pair it with a denim midi skirt for everyday, try colored denim for a richer fall combination, or dress it up for church or the office.

Easy outfit formula: floral sweater + skirt + simple shoes + DONE.

5. Why Our Waffle Cardigans Keep Becoming Best Sellers

We brought back two customer favorites during Coffee Chat: our Waffle Open Cardigans in Winter Rose and Mocha.

And their popularity makes sense.

A lightweight open cardigan gives you another way to wear your short-sleeve tops, graphic tees, dresses and basics as temperatures change.

Mocha works beautifully with warm neutrals, denim, rust and cream.

Winter Rose adds some color without making the rest of your outfit difficult to coordinate.

If you're trying to build a more versatile wardrobe, this is exactly the type of piece we recommend looking for: one layer that creates several new combinations from clothes you already have.

How to Build Easy Modest Fall Outfits

If getting dressed has started feeling harder than it should, don't assume you need to replace your closet.

Start with what you already reach for.

Your favorite denim skirt.
A basic tee.
A comfortable dress.
A graphic tee you wore all summer.

Then add one useful fall layer.

A cardigan can extend your short sleeves into cooler weather. A sweater can pair with several skirts you already own. A thin long-sleeve layer can even keep your favorite graphic tees going well into fall.

That's how we like to shop for Classy Closet, too.

Not clothes that create one cute outfit. Pieces that help create more outfits.
