Easy Modest Fall Outfit Ideas: What We Tried On During Coffee Chat
Fall dressing sounds easy until you actually stand in your closet. 😂
The mornings are cooler, afternoons can still warm up, and you want an outfit that feels like fall without piling on heavy layers you’ll regret two hours later.
That was pretty much the theme of this week’s Coffee Chat Live at Classy Closet (see video attached below). We tried on a handful of easy fall pieces, talked fit, played with layers, and put together outfits that work for real everyday life.
Here are a few of our favorite ideas to steal for your own closet this fall.
1. Start With an Easy Textured Top + Denim Skirt
One of the simplest formulas for a modest everyday fall outfit?
Cute top + denim midi skirt + comfortable shoes.

Our blue-grey ribbed drop shoulder top is exactly the kind of piece that makes this work. The texture gives it a little more interest than a basic tee, but it’s still casual enough for errands, school pickup, working from home or a regular Tuesday.
Pair it with a fun rust colored skirt, mocha skirt, or dark wash denim skirt and you have an outfit that feels put together without really doing much at all.
And around here, those are usually the outfits that get worn the most. 😉
2. Keep a Cardigan Close
Thermal waffle button cardigans are one of those pieces that earn their closet space this time of year.

Wear one buttoned as your top with a layer, leave it open over a basic tee or tank, or toss it in the car for later.
That versatility is especially helpful during Midwest fall when the temperature at breakfast and the temperature at school pickup apparently don't communicate with each other. 😂
A neutral cardigan also gives you more outfit options without needing to buy an entirely new outfit. Try it with:
- A denim midi skirt + simple tee
- A black or neutral knit skirt
- A casual dress
- A blouse for work or teaching
- A lightweight layering top underneath
One cardigan. Lots of outfits. That's our kind of closet math.
3. Let the Denim Be the Detail
We also tried on our dark wash denim skirt with white curve stitching.
This is a good example of why a denim skirt doesn't have to feel boring.

The darker wash makes it easy to dress up for church, teaching or casual work outfits, while the white stitching gives it enough detail that a really simple top still looks intentional.
For an easy fall outfit, pair a statement denim skirt like this with a solid sweater, neutral cardigan or simple long sleeve top and let the denim do the work.
4. Don't Forget Your Lightweight Casual Layers
Not every fall day calls for a sweater.
Our khaki + white striped textured hooded top gives you that fall layered look while still keeping things casual and easy.

This is the kind of piece we'd grab for busy mom days, weekend errands, outdoor activities or those days when you want to be comfortable but still want something cuter than your oldest sweatshirt. 😉
Pair it with a denim skirt and sneakers and you're done.
5. The Layering Trick That Makes a Cute Sweater More Wearable
One of our favorite combinations from Coffee Chat was our blue mock neck sweater with white contrast trim and open side ties.
Those open sides are adorable—but if you prefer more coverage, there's an easy fix.
We layered our white microfiber layering top underneath it.

Now you still get the fun side-tie detail of the sweater, but with the extra coverage underneath. The white layer also ties right into the white contrast trim, so it looks like it was meant to be worn together.
This is exactly why we're big fans of keeping a few good modest layering basics in your closet.
Sometimes you don't need a different top.
You just need the right layer underneath it.
Build a Fall Closet That Mixes Instead of Starting Over
If there's one thing we want you to take from these Coffee Chat try-ons, it's this:
You don't need a closet full of completely new outfits every season.
Start with pieces that work with what you already own.
A cardigan that works with three skirts. A denim skirt you can wear casually or to church. A layering top that makes several sweaters more wearable. A textured top that's cute alone now and easy to layer later.
That's how we like to shop—and how we help our Classy Closet girls get more than one outfit out of what they buy.
And before we wrapped up Coffee Chat, we snuck in a couple little peeks at what's coming in today's New Arrivals. 👀
You girls always get first dibs before I decide what I'm allowed to keep for myself. 😂
